Prototype De Luxe
I came across photographs of the Škoda 440 Spartak De Luxe with the test license plate “ZKOUŠKA ZB-?1-16.”
It seems this version of the Spartak never made it into serial production. I assume it was a prototype incorporating several minor yet useful improvements that would have benefitted the model. Judging by its features, it likely came after the start of production, as it does not display early design traits – it lacks the “Tudor-style” gearshift through the front bulkhead but also doesn’t have the final version with the small turn-signal switch in the control panel under the ashtray (this one still features the larger lever under the fuel gauge).
Fuel filler neck at bottom – possibly an electric fuel pump with return line, used in export versions of the 1200 series.
Scissor spring struts – replace the original mechanical rods. Significant improvement. Leatherette spare wheel cover.
Design detail – protruding metal for lock latch, while a regular trunk is bordered by metal along its entire width.
Instrument cluster – black version, relocated button panel between gauges, in the middle compartment an interesting rectangular element (speaker or radio?).
