Our 1202 STW

Year of manufacture: 1963. Built in Vrchlabí, the car has approximately 60,000 km on the odometer. Although it was purchased in well-preserved condition, we eventually decided to carry out a complete restoration to bring it back to its original shine and reliability.

After renovation.

Škoda 1202 around the world. I have a strong bond with the STW model – as a boy in Iran, I “co-drove” hundreds of kilometers.

Continuation. I can still smell the gasoline inside, a scent unique to this model (the 1203 smelled similar).

More in the WORLD section: Iran 1969 – Caspian Sea. Going to the cottage from Tehran to the sea took half a day.

After purchase.

Restoration: For a perfect result, only a complete, high-quality restoration is acceptable. Here already stripped and ready for painting.

Body sandblasting.

Colleague takes the wheel and we head to the paint shop.

With the “bare car” to the paint shop under its own power.

In the paint shop.

Returning from paint shop.

I didn’t like the dull, common colors of these cars, so I looked for other shades and finally chose what was probably the original yellow (see one advertising photo in the adjacent section).

This color also appears in older Škoda palettes. In any case, it’s a pastel, optimistic shade that I really like.

In the end, we decided to remove the body from the chassis for a perfect restoration result.

Cavity preservation.

Final lowering of body onto chassis.

The assembly of body and chassis went smoothly.

We tried a look for the off-road modification. :-)
