Our 1000 MB
Manufactured in 1964 in Mladá Boleslav. 42,000 km – excellent, completely original condition. Version 990. A valuable first model, nicknamed “Žábrovka” for its rear ventilation slots.
I consider the 1000 MB to be a car that stood out sharply from the crude, post-war designs of previous Škoda models and the later decline of late socialism. It is one of the few post-war Škoda cars with professional design and, perhaps surprisingly, one of my favorites in the collection.
This car was unfairly criticized by the public (“1000 Little Pains,” etc.), but in reality it was a very high-quality, durable, and technologically advanced model! Few people know that its new production hall was among the most modern in Europe — for example, the aluminum engines were later licensed for the Renault 16! The engine’s power output per liter exceeded that of its competitors.
High-quality chrome, paint, plastics, corrosion-resistant body, very comfortable ride, one key for the entire car, and many other advantages… I don’t know a single car that, after 50 years of use, still has its original master brake cylinder in working condition — or a fully functional hydraulic brake and clutch system. I was surprised how noticeably worse the comfort and handling were in the later Škoda 100.
